FACT SHEET1993 -- Percussion Discussion was first performed. The show now visits 70 locales per year, presenting 124 performances. Running Time -- 60 minutes. Personnel -- Percussion Discussion is a one-man show featuring percussionist Ken Bergmann. Notable Performances -- Tony Larussa's "Stars to the Rescue," The Lawrence Hall of Science, the Marin Center for the Performing Arts, Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts, and Cazadero Performing Arts Camps. The show has received rave reviews from parents and children, as well as music educators and media. Education -- Percussion Discussion ties in directly with California's 3rd grade science and 6th grade social studies curriculum, as well as the California Visual and Performing Arts Framework and the Harcourt Brace 2nd grade reading series. Resource guides are provided for each teacher at school site performances. Instrumentation -- A plethora of cow bells, triangles, wood blocks, shakers, cabasa, gankogui, numerous sound effects, and a 4-octave rosewood Marimba. The show also features a 6-piece Yamaha Recording Custom drum set. The electronic set-up includes a Korg 01 and a DrumKAT MIDI Controller. Origins of the instruments include Japan, South America, Europe, the United States and Mr. Bergmann's garage. Repertoire -- The show features Swing, Latin, Jazz, Rap and Rock music as well as the ragtime music of Scott Joplin and the Baroque music of J.S. Bach. Presentation -- All the material is presented in a humorous theatrical environment. The hour-long show features instruments from around the globe, a Brazilian Samba, an inside look at drumming, beaters, techniques and instrumentation. The show concludes with a unique solo performance that uses unconventional techniques, electronics and playing surfaces. |
